What's going on at the Hunger and Health Coalition?
The Hunger and Health Coalition Asks Local
Gardeners for Surplus Produce.
The Hunger and Health Coalition is seeking donations of produce from local gardeners, large and small. Each month, the Hunger and Health Coalition collects and distributes thousands of pounds of fresh fruit and vegetables to low income residents in the High Country. The donation of extra fresh fruit and vegetables from local gardeners means more food reaches those in need.
What better way to use your garden's excess than to donate the food to a local food assistance program? We distribute fresh produce to people seeking food assistance on a daily basis. With the current economy, families are reducing their food budgets and shifting more of their income to pay for rising fuel costs. With food costs on the rise as well, many local families are struggling just to meet their basic needs. In times like this, the Hunger and Health Coalition is there for households faced with making impossible choices, such as whether to pay the rent or buy groceries.
The summer months are typically a time when food donations are down. A growing demand along with a reduced supply makes it more critical than ever that the local community contribute food. The current economy has had impact that crosses socio economic lines. When food is more expensive, it causes people to think twice before purchasing extra food to given as a donation. Contributing excess food from your garden is a cost effective way to help those in need.
If you would like to make a donation from your garden or donate non perishable items, food can be dropped off at the Hunger and Health Coalition, 141 Health Center Drive in Boone, Monday through Friday, 8:30am ? 4:30pm. If you have questions or need more information, please call 828-262-1628 or email hungerc@bellsouth.net.
